DADAISM … based on the principles of deliberate irrationality, anarchy, and cynicism and the rejection of laws of beauty and social organization…

Randomness was a key element to all things DADA.

Dada Chance-Randomness- See clip Tristan Tsara: To Make A Dadaist Poem

In my opinion, George Hodel, as a practicing Dadaist and serial killer, was compelled to incorporate “chance and randomness” into his crimes. Though premeditated and well organized, I believe that in many cases the victim was chosen completely at random – BY CHANCE.

To Make A Dadaist Murder

Chicago, Illinois June 5, 1945

You live and kill in L.A.  On a summer day at the close of WW II you decide you need a change of pace.  You travel East, to conduct a little business in New York. But, all work and no play makes George a dull boy, so you make a stop-over in the hub-city to attend your good friend and family photographer, Man Ray’s artwork, currently on display at the Chicago Art Institute.

Perfect timing. You can take in the show, see your fellow Dadaist’s as well as that of forty of his fellow modernists, all on display at the same gallery.  You arrive chic-late, view the exhibit and share some good wine, crackers, cheese and a little conversation with fellow devotees, impressing all with your erudite knowledge of the art world and all things- surreal.

Inspired from viewing your fellow Dadaists creativity, and with a few hours to kill remaining in the Windy City, before continuing east, you decide to top off your short stay by committing a random murder. A totally unexpected- hit and run. Could anything be more DADA?

Josephine Ross  “Chicago Bathtub Murder,” – June 5, 1945

On the morning of June 5, 1945, the victim, a 41-year-old divorcee, was accosted inside her residence apartment. Her assailant brutally beat her about the face and head with a blunt object and then slashed her jugular vein with a sharp knife. He then placed the body in the bathtub, and used a douche bag to wash it clean, and after toweling it dry carried it to the bed. He tied a woman’s silk stocking tightly around her neck and then “doctored to her” by carefully placing some 3″x1/4″ strips of white surgical tape over her facial lacerations. As a final act of posing he covered her head with a red skirt before leaving. A suspect seen exiting the apartment just before the body was discovered fit the description of Dr. George Hill Hodel.

Because of the close similarity in “M.O.” to the Hollywood Bathtub Murder of victim, Georgette Bauerdorf, which occurred eight-months prior (Oct. 11, 1944) LA Sheriff’s homicide detectives actively investigated the Chicago Ross murder as possibly being connected. They requested fingerprint comparisons and exchanged info with Chicago P.D. (The 1944, Georgette Bauerdorf murder, which occurred just three miles from my father’s, newly purchased Franklin House residence is extensively documented in BDA, where I make the case that it was most probably committed by George Hodel.)

Man Ray travels from Hollywood for opening of Chicago Exhibition in May, 1945

Man Ray’s artwork was on exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute at the time of the Ross Murder. The exhibit opened in late April and ran through early July, 1945. The show featured 41 prominent artists, most of them from Europe. A May 5, 1945 article from the Chicago Tribune prominently featured references to Man Ray’s attendance and participation at the show, calling him, ”the first American Dadaist.”

Man Ray, at the time of the exhibit was good friends with George and Dorothy Hodel and was living in Hollywood. In 1944-45 as our family photographer, he had taken a number of carefully posed photographs of Dorothy. Some alone and some with his then fiancee and soon to be wife, Juliet Browner.

In addition to Man Ray, the Chicago exhibit displayed works by many noted artists including: Herbert Bayer, Fernand Leger, Henry Moore, Miguel Covarrubias and many others. (SKH Note- Miguel Covarrubias had become good friends with John and Dorothy Huston during the few years they lived in NY. Covarrubias had illustrated all of the drawings for Huston’s book, Frankie and Johnny, published in 1929 and dedicated to my mother, who was married to John and that time. (Their marriage lasted seven years, from 1926-1933)

See an interesting article written by Michael Guillen,  John Huston & Miguel Covarrubias: A Friendship: here.

Was Chicago’s Josephine Ross bathtub murder a repetition of George Hodel’s Hollywood Bauerdorf bathtub murder? Was it and the two Chicago “Lipstick Murders” to follow, (Frances Brown in  December, 1945 and  Suzanne Degnan, January 1946) also precursors to his most famous surreal masterpiece – 1947 Black Dahlia Murder- Murder As a Fine Art?

Why I Give: Steve Hodel
Retired Homicide Detective, Los Angeles Police Department
Los Angeles, CA

Hodel During more than two decades as a homicide detective with the Los Angeles Police Department, I personally conducted over 300 murder investigations. After retiring, I became a licensed private investigator and criminal defense investigator. I have seen firsthand that our criminal justice system works most of the time — but not always. Wrongful prosecutions occur. Innocent people are convicted.

Once an individual is arrested and logged into the system, a lot can go wrong. An overzealous detective or prosecutor confronted with public pressure will often pursue a weak or borderline case when cooler heads should prevail and the case be continued for further investigation. If a criminal complaint is formally charged, there is rarely any turning back. Professional reputations are on the line, and in the more serious cases of rape, armed robbery and murder — politics get in the way.

That is why I support the Innocence Project. They have become the court of last resort. Thanks to the Innocence Project’s tireless efforts, more convictions are overturned each year and more actual innocents go free. Many of these individuals have been imprisoned for decades, some of them on death row for crimes they did not commit.

I urge you to join me in supporting the Innocence Project’s cause — which is simply to ensure due process and prevent wrongful convictions.

RECENT SUCCESS OF LAPD/DOJ TEAMWORK IN COMPUTER LINKING OF DNA MAY HOLD PROMISE IN SOLVING OF ZODIAC COLD CASE KILLINGS?

Do these three (3) Untested Southern California Evidence Letters Contain Zodiac’s DNA?

zodiac so calif letters fnl

Southern Calif Zodiac Letters

LAPD and Riverside police departments hold three separate letters believed written by ZODIAC and mailed to the press and police in Southern California.  Each of these letters may contain ZODIAC DNA either under the stamp or on the flap of the envelope. The letters all in police custody and shown above are:

1)  1967 Cheri Jo Bates Letter mailed by Zodiac to “Riverside Police Dept.” (Booked in evidence by Riverside. Suspect used double postage stamps identical to 1947 Black Dahlia Avenger.)

2) 1971 Letter mailed by Zodiac to “The L.A. Times” (Booked in evidence by LAPD. Suspect used double postage stamps identical to 1947 Black Dahlia Avenger.)

 3) 1978 Letter mailed by Zodiac to “KHJ TV Studios” (Believed booked in evidence by LAPD.)

1971 ZODIAC LETTER TO LA TIMES

“I do have to give them credit for stumbling across my riverside activity, but they are only finding the easy one, there are a hell of a lot more down there.”

ZODIAC

To my mind, this letter contains the highest probability of containing actual suspect DNA. It is recognized as being a legitimate letter written by Zodiac. In it, he acknowledges and takes credit for the 1966, Cheri Jo Bates murder, and informs the public that he has killed a lot more victims ”down there.” [Southern California]

1978 Zodiac Letter To KHJ-TV

When I first viewed this letter, I had mixed reactions as to whether this was/is a legitimate Zodiac Letter. The handwriting in the body of the letter, though apparently disguised, when compared to other known writings, seems a bit off. However, the handwriting on the envelope is much more consistent with known Zodiac samples.  In the past few weeks in focusing my attention on this letter, I have discovered what I believe to be new information that may well strengthen the case for the letter having actually been written by Zodiac. (My apologies if some of the information has been referenced elsewhere by other researchers/investigators. If it has been, I have not come across it.) Here’s what I’ve discovered:

The Letter

KHJ TV zodiac 5-2-78004

This letter was received by KHJ-TV in May, 1978 and turned over to the LAPD as evidence. It contains death threats against five individuals: LAPD Chief of Police, Darryl Gates, Ex-LAPD Chief Ed Davis, singer, Pat Boone, Black Activist, Eldridge Cleaver, and Manson Family member, Susan Atkins. Specifically relating to Susan “Zodiac” writes:

“And Susan Atkins–the Judas of the Manson Family. Shes gona get hers now.”

The Envelope-

On the outside of the envelope where the return address should be “Zodiac” has written some backward letters and numbers. The top line reads “CIA” with the letter C reversed

Original 1978 envelope booked in LAPD custodyKHJ1 writing backward orig

Below I have mirror reversed the original printed information which now reads:

“1,2,3,4,5,6,7″ (7 reversed)

A.G.C.G.T.H!”

KHJ 2 writing reversed

 Helter Skelter - Bugliosi/Manson

Based on “Zodiac’s” reference to the Manson Family in the text of his letter it becomes obvious that the source of the enigmatic message on the outside of the envelope is also a direct reference to Charles Manson. Further, it is my belief that the person who wrote this letter had also read and was familiar with author Vincent Bugliosi’s bestseller, HELTER SKELTER: The True Story of the Manson Murders, published four-years earlier. (1974)

 Why?

I believe the enigmatic coded reference on the 1978 envelope is classic Zodiac. His message could have been more direct, and spelled out, but wasn’t. He preferred to let the authorities figure it out for themselves. (If they have, I haven’t seen it made public?)

Bottom Line:

I believe the stamps and flaps on these mailings are all strong potential L.A. sources for ZODIAC DNA. They are separate and apart from the Bay Area DNA evidence. Hopefully, with the recent success of the GRIM SLEEPER DNA match, LAPD and RIVERSIDE PD will be more open to attempting to obtain DNA from these sources to assist SFPD and DOJ in their Zodiac investigation.  Once valid confirmed Zodiac DNA is obtained in can quickly be input into the State and Federal CODIS DNA databanks and hopefully, give us an answer.

SKH Note- I know for a fact that my father, Dr. George Hill Hodel, had read and was familiar with Bugliosi’s bestseller, HELTER SKELTER, because during that time period he expressed an interest in the investigation, and on one of his regular visits to me in L.A. told me he had read it and asked me directly, “What I thought about the book?” My response was, “Sorry dad, I haven’t read it.”

CONDEMNED BEFORE HIS TRIAL–AMERICA CALLS THIS JUSTICE”

                               London Sunday Pictorial, 1946

heirens montage.jpg

William Heirens, today, age 81,  is serving his 64th year in prison.

Excerpt from the book, YOUR NEWSPAPER: Blueprint For A Better Press (The MacMillan Co. NY, 1947) pg. 49:

The Tribune trying to live up to the slogan of being”the world’s greatest newspaper,” claimed four “great beats” during the case. [Heirens] In a three-column story the Tribune wrote:

“For the first time in newspaper history, the detailed story of how three murders were committted, naming the man who did them, was told before the murderer had confessed or was indicted…”

These are the Tribune’s own words!

In 1946, boldly declaring their bragging rights, the Chicago Tribune announced to the world that their paper had obtained a “historical first” by declaring to the public that teenager William Heirens was the “Lipstick Killer” of  three Chicago women BEFORE he was charged with any crime or had “confessed.” They played it as – “The Scoop of the Century.”

In reality, the Chicago Trib’s role was that of mob leader in the public lynching of an innocent man. That newspaper provided the rope, put the noose around young Heiren’s neck, and tossed it over the transom.

”The Trib” served as prosecutor, judge and jury and with deliberate and cold premeditation forced young Bill Heiren’s to plead guilty, or die.

It was one of American Journalism’s worst hours and their crime is ONGOING.

Read the full condemnation written by both U.S. and U.K. journalists in 1946 and published in their book, YOUR NEWSPAPER: Blueprint For A Better Press (MacMillan NY 1947)  just months after the Tribune’s public lynching by headlining false evidence and a fictional confession shouted out on Page One and run nation-wide before Bill Heirens was even charged with any crime. (All of the book’s contributing journalists were Harvard Nieman Fellows.)

MICHAEL PAUL HODEL

July 12, 1939 – May 6, 1986

Today would have been brother Mike’s 71st birthday.  He was a man of and for The People. For the underdog, the little guy. He never hesitated to speak out against injustice. He is greatly missed.

GOOD NIGHT MIKE!

Here are some brief memories from his short life:

DOJ CRIME LAB CRIMINALISTS LINKED SON’S DNA TO FATHER USING STATE OF THE ART TECHNOLOGY

LAPD CRIME LAB DIRECTOR, GREG MATHESON PRAISES DOJ CRIMINALISTS:

(Excerpt from L.A. Times):

“They made sure there was no ‘t’ that wasn’t crossed and no ‘i’ that wasn’t dotted,” said LAPD laboratory director Greg Matheson, who attended the meeting. “But we were obviously excited about this being their first hit, and it was a very good one.”

The familial search cost the state $40,000, with much of the work done on overtime, Spriggs said. She said she and other scientists never doubted they could nab a criminal suspect this way, and that statistically they were due for a breakthrough.

LA Times article, “In Grim Sleeper case, a new tack in DNA searching.”

Speaking as a veteran LAPD homicide detective, I am extremely proud of how well the LAPD and DOJ “teamed up” to accomplish the arrest of “Grim Sleeper” suspect, Lonnie David Franklin Jr.

It was professional and perfectly coordinated.  I believe the “Grim Sleeper” investigation will prove to be the “Poster-Boy” for the use of familial DNA searches and that it will bring a sea-change across the nation eventually seeing the procedure adopted by all state and federal law enforcement.

Cetainly, legitimate rights to privacy issues will be raised and must be strictly adhered to and respected. But, the immense potential for this procedure becoming a major crime-fighting tool is UNLIMITED. If used correctly, familial DNA testing can and will take a whole bunch of bad guys off the streets.

LAPD ALLEGES SON’S DNA LINKS FATHER  TO 11 LA MURDERS OVER PAST THREE DECADES-

According to authorities, Lonnie David Franklin Jr. , a former LAPD mechanic and city trash collector has been linked to the murders of 10 woman and one man over past twenty-five year period.

Investigators remove items from home of Lonnie David Franklin Jr.(Gary Friedman, LA Times, July 7, 2010)

“9 of the 12 cases are linked by ballistics. We have DNA evidence linking 6 of the 12 cases together. We have cross-over on two or three of the cases, so we know it’s the same guy.”

Detective III Dennis Kilcoyne. LAPD Cold Case Unit

My highest KUDOS to LAPD’s Cold Case Unit, and especially to Detective III Dennis Kilcoyne. I knew Dennis well for many years at Hollywood Homicide way back when in “the old days.” I trained Dennis at Hollywood Homicide (mostly in how to drink and read the pretty ladies palms at our local watering holes.) Dennis is a real class act. He is humble, has the ability to acknowledge when mistakes are made, and is extremely tenacious. In my book, he is truly one of LAPD’s FINEST.

MAJOR KUDOS TO LAPD’S COLD CASE UNIT!

Thanks to the tireless efforts of LAPD and DOJ agents working as a team, residents of South Central Los Angeles can breath a lot easier this morning.

Lonnie David Franklin Jr., age 57, has been arrested and remains in “no bail” custody pending formal charges with the L.A. DA’s office. His arrest is being attributed to linkage made from his son’s DNA, which due to it’s STR loci similarities, led detectives to the man they are claiming is the actual killer- HIS FATHER.

 I quote from this morning’s L.A. Times:

“In announcing the arrests, Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley praised the LAPD and the California Department of Justice, which carried out the DNA “familial search” after Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown approved the use of the relatively new tool.

Only California and Colorado have formal policies that permit the use of software to look for DNA profiles of possible relatives of a suspect.”

Due to the proven success of using familial DNA searches in Southern California, I suggest that  the procedure now be tried in Northern California. Let’s start with one of San Francisco’s oldest and coldest unsolved serial killers-  ZODIAC.

I really know very little about my cousin, Marion Hodel. Perhaps that is why to this day, he remains in my mind, as a bit of a mystery.  A shadowy family figure.

I only met Marion on perhaps three or four occasions, and each time was while I was “playing” and he was working.  Cousin Marion was the Paymaster at all three of the Southern California racetracks, which included: Del Mar, Hollywood Park and Santa Anita.

In “the old days” some of our investigations at Hollywood Homicide required we drive out to the local race tracks (on duty naturally) to check out “the usual suspects.”  These would be either Hollywood Park or Santa Anita. While we were “working” we naturally wanted to blend in with the masses, so, naturally we’d have to have a few drinks and make a few bets.  On occasion, I’d go to the paymaster’s office, shake hands with my cousin, and pick up box seats for the day. Marion was always friendly and cheerful, but we never really “talked.” Oddly, we never met off track. No family visits or conversations. (Knowing what I know now, WISH I HAD.)

The below 1971 article profiling cousin Marion establishes he was Paymaster at the three race tracks, since 1952.

Imagine being ”The Paymaster” to all three So. Cal racetracks in 1952. Talk about potential connections to the rich and infamous. Shaking hands with J. Edgar Hoover and Bugsy Siegel back to back. (Both men is is reported, absolutely loved the “Sport of Kings.”)

marion hodel valley news 1971.JPG

Here is a brief summary on the little I do know about Marion Hodel:

Marion was born in Los Angeles, circa 1911.  He was the son of my great aunt Ida and uncle, Walter Hodel. Walter was my grandfather’s brother and also came to Los Angeles at the turn of the century from Odessa, Russia. (I met my great uncle, Walter Hodel only once, in April 1970, about seven years before his death. He died at the advanced age of 95, in Santa Barbara, California.) The picture below, taken on that 1970 visit, shows great uncle Walter standing next to but, not exactly towering over, my 63 VW “Bug”:

Walter Hodel, father of Marion Hodel photo taken in 1970 -age 89. He died six-years later at age 95.

Walter Hodel April 1970 Santa Barbara.jpg

In checking data bases I came across an interesting document.  It shows that Marion Hodel in 1946 was living at the Franklin House with his Uncle (George Hodel Sr.) This was likely during my father’s absence overseas in China as an UNRRA officer. (Feb-September 1946) There is no available info as to whether Marion remained after his Uncle’s return in September, 1946?

marion hodel 1946 franklin hse.jpg

Here’s a short interview with Paymaster Marion in the L.A.Times , November, 1976 by Staff Writer, Bion Abbott:

Marion Hodel LAT 1976.pdf

I only have one anecdote regarding cousin Marion.

Sometime in the late 1970s, I was flying from LA to New York on an extradition. I was going to return a suspect arrested on a murder warrant out of Hollywood.

In those days, due to the fact that we were always armed, and “skyjacking” was much more in vogue, the airlines required police officers to pre-register and provide our name and seat number.

Shortly after takeoff, the stewardess approached me and asked, “Excuse me, detective, but the captain wants to know if you are any relation to Marion Hodel?”  I told her, I was, and that “Marion is my cousin.”  A few minutes later the captain came back and greeted me. Shaking my hand, he informed me that he was, “a good friend and business partner with Marion.” Turns out they “together owned a race-horse.”  (Should have got the name. If not the man, then at least the horse.)

Not sure when Marion died, but records show possibly in 1981, but that is unconfirmed.

Be happy to hear from anyone who knew or was a friend to my cousin Marion Hodel. Obviously my information is very limited.
